I had to track this film down because it stars two of my all-time favorite actors ever, Robert Patrick & Roy Scheider. This probably wasn't anywhere close to being a classic, but it wasn't garbage either. For the type of movie, this was not excessively violent, though violence was a part of it.

By the end things were very confusing, so it would be hard to call this movie predictable. But a major development halfway through gave it a new energy, and the second half was not only exciting but sometimes chilling, helped by very weird music and sound effects that included heartbeats.

At first there didn't seem to be much to this movie, and flashbacks to Michael's earlier life (including scenes with his brother Jesse) were frequent and annoying. Meanwhile, someone is watching Michael's apartment and taking pictures of him. The mayor will do anything-short of hurting his daughter-to guarantee his re-election. She doesn't get along with her father, mainly because of his morals, and she tells Michael her mother was given six months to live two years ago. Porter (we're told he is mayor of 'this city' and shown that it is a large city, but never told what city). His former girlfriend Kate is the daughter of corrupt mayor Harry S. And the world needs out gift. The twin brother of pathologist Michael Daniels has been missing for ten years, but Michael will not give up the search. We’re responsible to find our path to healing and without deep healing our gift will be muted. The challenge for me is getting my sticky hands off the wheel and letting it happen. My woo theory and personal experience is that sleep is also a time when the channel to heaven can be opened, and we can get the spiritual downloads we need. The theory is that the fluid literally "rinses" out the toxic chemicals that accumulate during our waking hours. It's like our brains take a wee bath when we sleep. As soon as the oxygen rich blood is gone, it is replaced by something called Cerebrospinal Fluid that pulses through our brains. But during sleep, the brain doesn't need the same level of oxygen, and blood literally vacates our brains, leaving space. A lot of our blood flow is dedicated to our brains with it's oxygen load. Here's the science from a Boston University study in 2019. I want to fight the toxicity with rationality, but it turns out sleep is a better warrior.

In rest, the toxic brain chemicals that feel like poison, are neutralized.

My natural inclination is to process difficult things through thinking (brooding) incessantly on them, but I’m lately thinking that the process towards healing is more about flow and sleep. If my stress and trauma are represented by wounds on the skin, what I normally try to do is poke at those things, pick off scabs, try to understand why they hurt so much and rationalize the pain away, which really, REALLY doesn’t work. Unprocessed stress and trauma interferes with hope and diminishes optimism about the future. For me, it feels like these unprocessed stress chemicals bring anxiety, compulsive thinking, and irresistible urges for numbing. In daily life, daily stresses, both small things and also big traumas, build up toxic chemicals in our brains. I have this theory about sleep and it turns out some of it is actually supported by science. And, related, I’ve been thinking a lot about the value of sleep, because it seems like a lot of good stuff can come through the channel when I get my rational brain out of the way. In short, I've become pretty committed to this alignment prayer.
